The background note ‘War commemoration reconsidered' offers an exploratory inquiry into current commemorative practices and the various problems with which they are confronted. Particular points of interests are the various messages carried by commemorative practices, the challenges in reaching present and future audiences, and the opportunities and risks of remembrance tourism.
On Positive and Negative Peace
The research report ‘On Positive and Negative Peace' entails a rich conceptual approach to peace education and analyses organisations' offers of peace education projects for Flemish schools.
Advice concerning the crosscurricular attainment targets: remembrance and peace education
The Flemish Parliament adopted a Parliamentary Act introducing new attainment targets and development goals in primary and secondary education. Two of the new cross-curricular attainment targets focus on avoiding intolerance and racism, and on insight into the role of conflicts. The Peace Institute draws attention to a number of important elements related to operationalizing the cross-curricular attainment targets in question.

11 November Lecture by Erwin Mortier
To commemorate the end of the First World War the Flemish Peace Institute, the In Flanders Fields Museum and Ypres, the City of Peace will be organising a Remembrance Day Lecture on the eve of the 92nd anniversary of the Armistice. After Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba of Hiroshima in 2008 and war correspondent Robert Fisk in 2009, author Erwin Mortier this year accepted an invitation to write out his vision on war and peace in commemoration of the First World War. Graindelavoix will provide a musical interlude in the frame of this Remembrance Day lecture.

Conference 'Towards a European defence market: can effectiveness be combined with responsibility?'
On 29 November 2010 a conference on the developments in the European defence market will be held in the Flemish Parliament in Brussels. The conference is organised by the Flemish Peace Institute, in cooperation with GRIP, SIPRI and the Flemish Department of Foreign Affairs, under the auspices of the Belgian EU Presidency. This conference aims to offer in-depth analysis into the rationale for a European defence market and asks the question to what extend an economic oriented policy is/ought to be combined with a preventive arms export control policy.
